Invisua, tunable LED lighting for retail

Invisua started in my garage. While I was working as a consultant, I built a colour-tunable LED spot, mostly as an exercise in optical design and embedded software. I showed it to a number of potential customers, did some more market research, wrote a business plan and found the funding. Invisua Lighting started in January 2013, and I ran it until October 2023. Over several funding rounds we raised €3M in total.
On the technical side I developed:
- optics that mix several LED colours into one tight beam;
- algorithms that control the spectrum, so the colour quality stays right at every setting;
- a communication protocol that needs little bandwidth and makes commissioning easy.
I led the team that combined these into one product. Next to that I did what a small company needs: setting up our own production and logistics, filing patents, building sales and distribution channels, managing the sales team and the installations.
Our lighting was used by Apple, BMW, Selfridges, Magasin du Nord, Takenaka and Holland Casino.
GEN3 module
A compact multi-colour LED module with up to eight LED channels and wireless control, for retail and museum lighting.

Colour algorithms
Algorithms for accurate colour setting and high colour rendering with multi-colour LEDs. They made it possible to control the light precisely across very different spectra.
